It is truly a sad time in our country. The lack of respect for science is appalling and for some deadly. Whether you read about the child who died because the parents listened to an herbalist and took their child off of insulin or commentators that say all supplements are unproven and dangerous, the truth seems more elusive than ever. We are morphing from the information age into the disinformation age. Nowhere is this more apparent than the anti-vax movement.

Lawmakers in Arizona are trying to pass three bills that would make it easier for parents to opt out of getting life-saving vaccinations for their children and even encouraging them to do so. Anti-vaccine advocates there are winning the debate with false narratives just as they did in Washington where almost 70 people have been diagnosed with measles. The false narratives run the gamut from autism risk to measles might reduce your cancer risk. Both statements are proven false beyond a shadow of a doubt. One of the most absurd comm...

Exciting news from Vanderbilt University that gives more evidence that Magnesium is so vital that supplementation is a smart thing to do.  We already know that Magnesium does so many great things for us including brain functioning, helping us sleep, helping cramps, keeping us more regular and aiding in proper calcium absorption.  Yet estimates of up to 80% of us do not even get the recommended daily allowance of Magnesium.  Now a study from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center has cast light on the fact that low Magnesium levels can slam Vitamin D absorption.

So if you raise Magnesium levels might you overdose if you are taking supplemental Vitamin D?  Apparently the role of Magnesium is to regulate, not just increase Vitamin D levels.  This study is the first to indicate that Magnesium optimizes Vitamin D levels.  Eating foods rich in Magnesium and supplementing to boost our levels of these important nutrients is smart.  It is logical.

After all, if 80% of us are def...

In our November 18, 2018 Logic Based Health Meetup, our theme was longevity. We discussed the importance of mitochondrial energy and some of the latest supplements that have been shown to possibly enhance mitochondrial health. Mitochondrial health has been at the forefront of longevity research and is increasingly viewed as a key to wellness as we age.

The big event at the LBH Meetup was the presentation by Dr. Olga Lazar from Emory University and Emory Hospital on the importance of telomeres relative to longevity. Her presentation on many of the tenets of the book “The Telomere Effect” by Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel was not only informative, but moving as well. Dr. Lazar especially focused on mindfulness and how she used it in her daily routine at the hospital. You will have to buy the book to get a full picture. But it involves living in the now, expanding your awareness, lowering stress, and reducing negative thought patterns.

Mindfulness is a way to better ageing that does n...

A recent CNN article highlighted the work of Kyle Freeman at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation.  Kyle has released a study on where countries around the world will rank in life expectancy by 2040.  And guess what? While countries like Spain and Japan are first and second in the rankings for life expectancy, the United States falls more than any other high income country.  In fact the US is predicted to fall below that of China by 2040, from 43rd in the world to 64th.  Surprised?  You should be.  We are better than that as a nation and as a people.  But the reality is that life expectancy has actually fallen over the last two years in the United States.  The Logic Based Health Longevity Summit on November 12 will deep dive into the latest research on exercise, diet, supplementation and other factors that are attributed to longer lifespans.  We will discuss what works, what does not and a local study on healthy ageing at Emory University which is the largest study of its’ ki...

I want to discuss an ingredient that after exhaustive study, I believe we should be cautious with, choline.  Choline is primarily found in meat, eggs and supplements.  The supplements that it is found in are multivitamins, B-complex vitamins, brain enhancement formulas and lecithin.  It is a vitamin like substance that we need for a variety of reasons including cellular health and neurotransmission.  It is so important that the USDA requires choline to be supplemented in non-cow’s milk infant formula.  So we all need it and should make sure we have an adequate amount.

The problem is what happens when we get too much of it over time.  Choline is associated with TMAO, which makes the blood more prone to clotting.  A 2013 article in the New England Journal of Medicine discussed the mechanism by which phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) creates TMAO and raises risk of heart disease and stroke. The Cleveland Clinic published a study earlier this year that showed that people wi...

For the first time a solid connection has been discovered linking zinc with cancer prevention.  The news out of the University of Texas last month is that they have discovered that Zinc inhibits overactive calcium signals in cancer cells thus stopping their growth.  Normal cells are not affected.  Sixteen thousand people died of esophageal cancer last year making it the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths. Previous studies have shown a preponderance of zinc deficiency in esophageal cancer, but no smoking gun.  Now real evidence is pointing to zinc as a possible preventative and treatment for esophageal cancer.

In a previous article, I vilified a MSN article for pointing to zinc along with other supplements including Vitamin C as a waste of money and potentially dangerous. I wonder how many people who are at risk or perhaps already unknowingly are developing esophageal cancer that read that article have stopped taking zinc supplements.  People go through chemotherapy and...

In case you haven’t noticed its allergy season once again and this season seems to be a rough one for the many people I have seen. Sailing through allergy season is unusual for me, normally this time of year would have me using the standard arsenal of over the counter drugs, nasal sprays & antihistamines.  When those failed I would be forced to visit my doctor for an occasional steroid shot or worse; a prescription of antibiotics for the dreaded sinus infection.

However to my surprise over the past few years I have been fortunate to skate by during the peak of the season with taking a few Benadryl.

I attribute this to a protocol that I have developed.  While it is a bit unusual and a little expensive (less than a doctor’s visit), it seems to working well for me.  It starts with mushroom supplements.  The first is a combination mushroom supplement that is high in Reishi and the second is a 500 mg AHCC supplement.  AHCC was developed in Japan about 20 years ago and is a patented, uniquely...

News from Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center is concerning for those of us that have been taking B6 and B12 for a long time.  Amounts larger than 20 mg of B6 or 55 mcg of B12 a day for 10 years in men (but not women) resulted in a two to four fold increase in lung cancer risk.  The big question I have is what about the methylated natural versions of these vitamins.  Most assuredly, over 99% of the B6 and B12 taken by the participants in this study were in the forms of pyridoxine and cyanocobalamin.  What about the active forms of B6 and B12 (P5P and Methylcobalamin)? What about the B6 and B12 found in food based supplements?  My take on this is that large dose synthetic B complex alone or in a multivitamin is even more unwise than before.  Taking the active coenzyme form or a whole food form has tremendous benefits and these forms typically have moderate amounts of the B vitamins.

When faced with new evidence, you make adjustments.  You moderate w...

Scientists unveiled a new cancer treatment on Monday that can remove tumors, reduce side effects and prevent the disease from coming back better than current techniques.

The treatment, called Caspase Independent Cell Death (CICD), was shown to effectively remove tumors in experimental models. Unlike chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy, which use a process called apoptosis to kill cancer cells, CICD was shown to cause fewer side effects,

It is always great to hear of new advances in medicine, whether they are traditional or non-traditional.  Combining the two is the best of both worlds.  The apoptosis process is one that a lot of natural substances utilize.  By feeding the body these substances like EGCG from green tea instead of dangerous substances we possibly can help to mitigate the toxic attack on our bodies from the 21st century environment we live in.  And if we can afford traditional medicine, maybe someday we can use CICD to cure us.

The concept behind Logic Based Health is pretty self-explanatory, but the reasons behind the title are fairly complex.  We live in an era with the greatest amount of choices for improving our health and yet the choices are so complex and varied that it is impossible to know anything for certain.  I certainly do not have all the answers I seek and I study it all the time.  Faced with all the information and disinformation we see from the medical community and the health food/alternative medicine community it is no wonder that many give up trying or latch on to simple answers for their health concerns.   But in order to be the best we can be we have to persevere and seek as much knowledge as possible and apply logic when we examine information.

Dollars drive a majority of the information we see on the internet, on television and at our health practitioners.  That does not mean that the information is wrong; often it is right.  But dollars and the lack thereof drive peo...
